Former Miami Hurricanes athletic director Paul Dee has passed away. He was 65 years old.
Dee, who recently was hospitalized for cancer treatment, endured open heart surgery in 2008.
A native of Palm Beach, he was inducted into the Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.
"We lost a teacher, leader, friend and a truly loyal man today," Miami
athletic director Shawn Eichorst said. "Paul Dee devoted every ounce of
energy and passion to the University of Miami over many, many years. The
Hurricane family sends its condolences and grieves along with his
family and friends."
Dee became Miami's athletic director in 1993 and remained so until 2008. He inherited a program that was in shambles, in the midst of NCAA sanctions, and succeeded in cleaning it up. He oversaw the 'Canes transition from the Big East to the ACC and helped Miami build an on campus basketball arena.
Dee graduated from the University of Florida in 1970 and earned his Masters degree from Miami in 1973. He then graduated from its law school in 1977. He was on the counsel before joining Miami's athletic program.
"Paul Dee was as generous, kind and patient as anyone I've
ever met in athletics," Miami women's basketball coach Katie Meier said.
"His vision for intercollegiate athletics was based on integrity and
equality. I will miss my mentor, adviser and friend."
Once a 'Cane, always a 'Cane.
RIP Paul Dee.
